History[ edit ] The Gibson Les Paul was introduced in , and was originally made with a mahogany body and a 1″ thick maple cap, mahogany neck with rosewood fret board and two P pickups. The guitar was only available in a gold finish. In late , a more luxurious version was introduced, most probably on specific request by Les Paul himself, as he wanted a more luxurious and classy looking guitar. He requested a black guitar as he wanted it to “look like a tuxedo”. Nicknamed the Black Beauty, the guitar had a mahogany body and neck, ebony fret board, and mother of pearl block markers inlays in the fret board. The “Split Diamond” inlay on the headstock was taken from the carved archtop Super , which was the top of the Gibson line. The pickups were a P in the bridge position and an Alnico V pickup, newly designed by Seth Lover , in the neck position. The new Custom also shipped with a different case from the Standard, using a black and gold case instead of the brown and pink case that was the top-of-the-line case for the Les Paul Standard models.

But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows.
The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years. To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine.

I’d say that when it comes to a white Les Paul Custom, a good many guitarists would think of Randy Rhoads and rightfully so. I mean, the guy was a game changer in the world of Rock and the hoards of fans he has to this day will testify to that very point. Back in the day trust me, I need to be general about the time period, but you can guess , I had a girlfriend that loved Fleetwood Mac.
Loved ’em like no other and if one of their slow, tears flowing down your face love songs came on the radio, you couldn’t pull her away with a team of Clydesdales. That meant that whatever attempts to “conduct some business” I was trying to accomplish were immediately put on hold with her declaration of, “Wait. Jeebus Jimminy, I can’t say that I exactly had Errol Flynn skills in high school, but I now had a new definition of “attempted coitus interruptus”, for Pete’s sake.
Anyway, this was also the period when Creem and Hit Parader magazines were the primary sources of anything Rock n Roll, so most of the pictures of Mr. Buckingham were with a bushy head of hair, a beard and that white Custom. X”, I took my new edition of Creem to her house and we looked at the pictures of the mighty Fleetwood Mac together I also thought that the young Stevie Nicks was hotter than a forgotten frying pan on the stove, but I could never even act like I even saw her.
That would be a betrayal of the highest form to a young high school girl. So I just concentrated on that white Custom and made my comments center about how cool he looked with that guitar, etc. All the while, we endlessly listened to the band and after a time and as if by some miracle, the music began to have a certain desired effect on this young lass and in my mind, that was the greatest reward I could have been given.

I would have called it a Custom 22S or something. I like the blade so much more than the rotary. A few clear coat indents or scratches but nothing through to the wood. It plays easily with low action and with the Fralin pickup it has a sweeter selection of single coil tones. Would be very at home in a modern country band or, of course, rock or blues.
