Early life[ edit ] McPherson was born Aimee Elizabeth Kennedy in the upstairs room of the family farmhouse outside the village of Salford , southeast of Ingersoll in Oxford County Ontario , Canada . As a child she would play “Salvation Army” with her classmates, and at home she would gather a congregation with her dolls, giving them a sermon. Novels, though, made their way into the Methodist Church library and with guilty delight, McPherson would read them. At the movies, she recognized some of her fellow Methodist church members. She learned too, at a local dance she attended, that her dancing partner was a Presbyterian minister. In high school, she was taught Charles Darwin ‘s Theory of Evolution. There, her faith crisis ended as she decided to dedicate her life to God and made the conversion to Pentecostalism as she witnessed the Holy Spirit moving powerfully. She decided to dedicate her life to both God and Robert, and after a short courtship, they were married on August 12, , in a Salvation Army ceremony, pledging never to allow their marriage to lessen their devotion to God, affection for comrades, or faithfulness in the Army. The pair’s notion of “Army” was very broad, encompassing much more than just the Salvation Army. Robert supported them as a foundry worker and preached at the local Pentecostal mission.

If we spread negativity at our church, then the first thing that we should do is STOP! Stop the talk about what we don’t like. Stop negativity generation – it influences others.
According to Pew Research, there are four primary reasons why people change churches: Location The translation is clear — Americans treat church like a product to consume instead of as a family to belong. When we treat church like a product, we consume until our needs are no longer met. When we treat church like a family, we fundamentally understand there are no perfect churches.
Like family, every church comes with broken people. That includes the church leadership. Too often people leave a church because of disagreement, not getting their way, or because the sermons are no longer deep enough. Often when we dig into the reason the sermons are not deep enough, it ultimately goes back to the person being offended or not having their faulty theologies endorsed from the pulpit.
The same pastor who was previously deep enough becomes shallow once there is an offense. Before we quit church, we need to make sure we take the separation seriously. Church is not a product to consume. When we leave, we make a statement. Just ask the Pharisees. They had audience with the Son of God but could not get past their offenses.

First, maybe someone here is in the process of looking for a good church, and you need to know what to look for. People pick churches for a lot of reasons, not all of them based on Scripture. Or, they feel welcomed and loved. Some pick a church based on what their kids like. So we need to understand the biblical criteria for a good church. Second, you may have friends who are looking for a good church, and you can offer them some specific help.
Although it should be the first place to look, it may not occur to them to check out what the Bible says about what constitutes a good church. And, third, I think we should use these qualities of a good church to evaluate ourselves so that we can try to improve where we need to. Also, before we look at these marks of a good church, we need to keep in mind that there are no perfect churches because churches are made up of imperfect people.
I can only skim over these points in this message, but I will devote some of the remaining messages in this series to some of these points. A good church is comprised of at least these ten qualities: It will conform to the culture. Many sad examples of this abound today. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Bruce Wydick September 25, Image: The biblical passage was 1 Kings 19, where the prophet Elijah calls his successor Elisha. The story begins with Elisha behind a team of oxen, plowing his field. Elijah approaches and puts his cloak around him, a gesture signifying prophetic calling in ancient Israel. Elisha responds by hosting a giant oxen-barbeque for the whole village, fueled by his plowing equipment.
With no plow and no more oxen, there is no turning back for Elisha. Elisha understood commitment and its costs. But as a university professor, one of the great dilemmas I have found within the millennial generation is that millennials possess two contradictory desires: A yearning for existential meaning by uniting their lives to a greater and higher purpose A desire to be free from the kind of serious commitment necessary for 1. Of course, this is only possible in a world of limited commitment.
I find that many of my university students fall into the same pattern of thinking in decisions related to graduate school, careers, marriage, and even spiritual commitments. Decisions are made based on their option value. There is no student I know who has been successful in college by keeping all of their academic options in play.

Weeks earlier, he was behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce — which also was used as a prop — as he emerged on stage for his sermon.
The luxury car, considered a dream car among many, was also used as a way of telling the congregation that they are a Rolls-Royce because they are made in the image of God. For the past several weeks, Young has been trying to relay the message that though God has given everyone a Rolls-Royce or a Ferrari one’s body , many are not using it the way it’s supposed to be used.
